Choosing Backup External Hard Drive

Choosing Best Backup External Hard Drive to meet your needs.

Hey guys, today we are going to talk about external backup hard drives. Yes, those boxes that get attached to your desktop or laptop, so which one is best for you.

If you start looking around then you will notice that there are lots of choices and you have to choose between things like capacity, size, speed, connection interface, brands, warranty and price.

I could say just go get Samsung Portable T5 SSD 1TB Drive for under $400 from Amazon or Newegg.  Problem Solved!!! But what if you don’t have that kind of money to burn? Well, if you don’t have that kind of money there are still lots of options on a budget.

Let’s go over few thing that people ask often when they are choosing external storage device.

  1. Q: Does physical size matters?

A: Yes and No. The only thing here is that you really need to know is that the 2.5” hard drive has a limit of 4TB but most commonly you will only see 2TB for external drive. Even larger drives are in the works but the are expensive. Where as 3.5” you can go as high as 14TB (14,000GB) Mind Blowing!! There are additional things you need to know about size but we will talk about it later in the article.

  • Q: Does Hard drive RPM matters?

A: In general; faster RPM drives are considered faster and better. However when it comes to external backup drives the RPM speed is not really important. I will explain little later on as too why.

  • Q:  Does Brand Name Matters?

A: Yes, try to stick with brand names like Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi (Hitachi is owned by WD). Your data is important and you want to keep it in a reliable drive.

  • Q: What connection interface should I get? USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, USB 3.1 (USB C).

A: Well the best would be thunderbolt or USB C but they tend to be expensive and rare at the moment. The most common would be USB 3.0 because it is popular, fairly available and fairly fast. You still can use USB 2.0 but it can make a huge difference if you are transferring large files and you are doing it on the fly. However it is still used but lots of people.

  • Q: What size drive should I get?

A: Well it really depends on what you are going to store on the Drive. In my opinion the sweet spot would be somewhere between 2TB and 4TB because it should be large enough to support your important files and with some room to grow. But you don’t want it too big because if it fails then you lose it all at once; I rather have 2 separate drives of 2tb than one 4TB Drive.  That is because If you buy one dive that is 4tb for let’s say for $100  which is little cheaper then two 2TB drives and it fails. You lose all your data and the $100. Where as if I have one of the 2TB drives fail I would only loose half of my data and only like $65. Do you see my point?

  • Q: Warranty?

A:  Warranty is only important to see how reliable the manufacturer things the hard drive is. Even though this is not a good indicator if a hard drive is reliable or not, but it is good to give you an idea. However because we are talking about external hard drives that are not in use it 24/7 , its not that important. You will most likely keep the drive way longer than the manufacturers’ warranty because you will not be using it all the time.

  • Q: Are there any external hard drives I should stay away from?

A: Yes, there are so called fat 2.5” portable drives. Its hard to be specific but they are typically small drives that the twice as thick as a regular 2.5” drives. The reason is that they typically include two drives stacked on top of each other to give you slightly better performance and larger capacity. The problem is that to make them appear as one drive they are connected internally to be in Raid 0 mode so that it looks like one drive. Raid 0 strips your data and splits it into two drives. The problem is that if one of those drives fails not only is your entire drive dead, and the data most likely would not be revocable even by a professional recovery company.

So which might be right for you?

I would suggest going with a 2.5” Backup Hard drive. Why? Because small 2.5” hard drive run on 5V witch can be supplied by a USB port which provide 5V and since you are connecting it already to a USB port That’s all you need to connect, USB cable and you are all set. Large 3.5” hard drives run on 12V so they need external power supply to supply the power. That means they are not that portable as a small ones.

Is Microsoft Windows 10 Better that Windows 8? YES!!!, Windows 9 skipped?

windows10-logoIs Microsoft Windows 10 Better that Windows 8? We think so!, Windows 9 skipped? Yes and there might be a good reason.

Microsoft officially announced that Windows 10 will be the next official Windows OS. Windows 9 has been skipped but the way Microsoft sees it Windows 8.1 took its place. Microsoft Windows 8 was a disappointment to many, mostly because there was so much difference from Windows 7. Windows 8 has a great concept but with lots of bugs and glitches it was not appalling to consumers. Windows 8.1 update was a huge improvement but still a lot of bugs and glitches remained.

So what happened to Windows 9? There are few rumors floating around as to why Microsoft skipped 9. One reason is that some believe Windows 8.1 was more like Windows 9 since Microsoft never added extension to the OS.  Second was that Windows 9 would have made a possible comp ability with third party software.  For a programmer that writes the code the (win9) could be mistaken for Win95 and Win98 when verifying a compatibility check and that could create issues. There is no official word why, but we believe that it has to do with compatibly check.

Microsoft Windows 10 Desktop View

The New Microsoft Windows 10 looks similar to Windows 8 but whit whole lot of improvements. The whole overall in Windows 10 is that it will look more like windows 8 but will work as Windows 7. Windows 7 is currently the most popular Widows on desktops. Microsoft continues to push Touch as forward thinking, but want desktop users to have same experience as they have had in the past few Windows generations.

Microsoft Windows 10 Desktop

Microsoft has launched its Windows 10 Insider Program that will allow beta testers to provide input and sniff out bugs before Win10 hits the general public sometime in fall of 2015

Microsoft knows that they screwed up with Windows 8 and I am sure that Windows 10 will Finally be a hit. From previous Windows releases its seems that its Microsoft trend to release one bad OS and follow up with a great one after that.

Working with Cayosoft Admin Assistant

Coyosoft Admin AssistantCayosoft Admin Assistant

Lately, we heard about a product from Cayosoft, called Admin Assitant, that claims to be able to render reporrting and eule enforcement for Acfive Directory, Office 365, and Windows Server.

Working with Cayosoft Admin Assitant

Cayosoft Admin Assitant utilizes a fairly simple console. A large number of built in templates are contained by the console, on which rules can be based. For instance, the computers -AD Computers (Report) template is used to compile a list of all of the computer objects in the Active Directory. There are few different options for each template. A preview query can also be performed, you can run the ruke, or you can also enforce the rule.

The preview option simply displays the query results within a window, in case if you are wondering. The result can be seen on the screen, or can be exported to a CSV file.

After you run a rule, the output is written to an HTML based report. When a rwport is run, Admin Assistant displays a message , telling yoj that records may be E-mailed or they might be displaye din the Reports folder, depending on how the rule is contoured.

Although it is useful to be able to run a rule manually, Cayosoft Admin Assitant is really all aboht automation. By enforcing rules, automation is attained. Yoh are also given the option to schedule to run on a periodic basis, when you select the Enable check box for a rule.

For the new templates to be downloaded at any time, Admin Assistant is designed. More essentially, administrators are given the ability to create custom rules, which can be based on existing temlpates or administrators can build rules entirely from scratch.

We find Admin Assistant to be a solid product that does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Using Citrix VDI-in-a-Box 5.2 or VDI Controller Advantages

Firewall system. Computer Network. What is Citrix VDI-in-a-Box 5.2?

Citrix VDI-in-a-box functions as a VDI controller. It sits as a VM appliance, in your data center, and tosses sessions between a breathtaking number of devices; Microsoft Hyper-V 2008 R2, VMware 5.0 update 1+, Citric XenCenter 6.1 hypervisor, and many others. Citrix uses an enhancement of RDP protocols by Microsoft, HDX protocol. With Citrix VDI-in-a-box you cannot virtualize hot sessions for non-Windows operating systems, and you will need a Microsoft volume licensing agreement to have Windows virtual licensed desktops available to you, a DHCP server, data store, and a naming convention for hosted Virtual Machines.

Although both companies, Citrix and VMware, have extra products, VMware native instance image considerations still lead a bit. Once you get the images correctly installed, you will have to license these; has a different licensing constraint. To prevent resource drainage during peak events, like a remote meeting time or morning start up time, Citrix allows VDI-in-a-box to be configured. For Citrix running Citrix VDI, Citrix recommended server infrastructure descriptions are less detailed than VMware. This might be due to the fact that Citrix runs as a connection broker over various different flexible hypervisor families, Whereas VMware Horizon View is run in a more controlled environment.

Images are delivered to remote based and local desktops without a hitch, and the draft images allow you to choose either Citrix HDX protocol or Microsoft’s RDP protocol. For a dramatic effect, high latency connections or low speed, you can also limit colour depth. You can also choose between hosted VMs use of network or device disks, smart cards, printers, or USB devices.

Security concerns are outside the scope of this product and should be buttoned down before the installation; Citrix VDI-in-a-box facilitates multiple hypervisor family platforms. Chances of misuse seem to be very limited as most organizations use the best security practices.
